Babies are not miniature adults and their body characteristics are entirely different from those of adults. Especially, 0 to 3 years of age is the most important as they significantly grow physically and emotionally during that period. In order to know the reason behind that smile of babies, Aprica studies “Baby’s Pediatrics” and utilizes “Childcare Engineering” to create the best environment for babies and pursue ideal baby products.

Principle, the reason behind that smile

Aprica has drawn out “8 Medical Structures to protect and nurture babies’ body and mind” from “8 Babies’ Immaturity in body to be protected”, and “3 Babies’ Emotional Growth to be encouraged”, identified through research about “Baby’s Pediatrics” and “Childcare Engineering”. Our “8 Medical Structures to protect and nurture babies’ body and mind” has been utilized to develop Aprica products.

    Aprica seeks to understand correctly the characteristics of a baby’s undeveloped body and mental development, in order to create the best childcare equipment for the best environment.

    2. Unstable respiratory function

    A baby’s breathing is characterized by abdominal breathing. As their nasal passage is narrow and easy to get blocked, irregularity in breathing may occur if their tummy is restricted in any way. Until a baby can sit upright by themselves, it is critical to lay them down on a flat bed without restricting their tummy and airway.

    A newborn has straight backbone and undeveloped muscles. Also, their hip joints are vulnerable to dislocation until around 4 months old. It is therefore important to keep their hands and feet move freely for the first year after birth as their posture significantly changes according to their growth such as holding up their head, sitting upright and walking by themselves.

Improving quality without compromise

  • Development of the world’s first newborn baby dummy with sensors

    For child seats, the national standard for test on assumed collision in a vehicle carrying a newborn baby involves using dummies weighing 3.4 and 9.0kg. In order to simulate the heavy head, unsteady necks and all other undeveloped functions of a newborn for the purpose of creating a really safe and secure child seat, Aprica created the first ever 2.5kg newborn baby dummy that is capable of joint movements and data measurement. Aprica also further developed a 3.4kg newborn baby dummy with sensors. Apart from using these dummies for national tests, Aprica also carries out in-house tests using these newborn baby dummies which mimic the characteristics of a newborn for product development.

  • In-house pursuit of safety and repeated impact tests

    At the fully equipped impact test laboratory of Aprica’s Central Research Centre, child seat development takes place concurrently with repeated experiments in the pursuit of safety.

    The unique “flat bed type” child seat designed to protect undeveloped babies was also developed after years of research and testing. Even while knowing that passing safety standards for bed type seats as compared to the typical chair type seats would be difficult, Aprica took on challenge in that problem and cleared both domestic and international strict standards.

    With regards to countermeasures against baby strollers being trapped in train doors, we persevere to create products that can be used with peace of mind, by setting a unique and strict set of quality standards where our test items do not only incorporate the domestic safety standards, but also the European standards (EN1888).
